RETURN ON INVESTMENT FROM YOUR WEB SITE

The principles of investing in your Web site is the same as investing in anything else. The bottom line is Return on Investment (ROI). If you're considering building your first Web site for your business or upgrading an existing Web site to support e-commerce, collect customer data or enhance customer service, figure out the lowest possible return on investment to see whether it's worth it.

For example, let's say a new Web site with all the features you want is going to cost $4,000 to setup and $500 a year to maintain. How many customers, as a result of your Web site, would you need to get in order to recover the total $4,500 in profit your first year? If you run a car dealership and you profit $2,000 for every car you sell, well the math's easy. You need to sell 3 cars from your Web site to recoup your investment. If you run an accounting firm and the typical client that retains your services earns you $1,000/yr. in profit, you need 5 customers as a result of your Web site. If you run a call center and want to direct customers to your Web site to reduce the time your operators are on the phone, simply define the number of inquiries your call center could avoid by directing traffic to your Web site. If your call center gets 100 calls/day and 10% of those callers could find their answer from your Web site, you'd save 10 calls per day. If the average caller spent 10 minutes on the phone, you'd save 100 minutes per day. Over a year you'd save 36,500 minutes or 608.33 hours per year. If you paid a person $10/hr to handle calls you'd save over $6,000 in labor, plus the cost of long distance charges on your phone bill.

Now, you must first determine the roll your Web site will play in the process of helping you reach your goal. Is your Web site going to help you get new customers, assist existing customers in finding answers to questions or operate as a value added service that customers will later look at to make purchasing decisions? Once you've determined the roll of your Web site you can see that determining the return on investment, from the above examples, is very easy.

Keep in mind that there are many ways, beyond just the few we've mentioned, that you can utilize your Web site to help you increase business, reduce costs and save time.
