IS YOUR WEB DEVELOPMENT OUTSOURCED TO AN OUTSOURCER?
It's obvious that
outsourcing your Web development to an e-business solutions provider can often
bring cost savings and allow you to inherit e-business expertise without the
investment of hiring in house. However, when considering using a company to develop
your Web site, e-commerce system or other online application, it's necessary
that you find a company to whom you can trust one of your most important investments.
Knowing how and by whom your Web development or e-business project
is going to be implemented is one of the first questions you should
ask. Ask to meet or speak directly to the programmers, designers
or project managers who are going to be involved in the actual production
of your system. Doing this will alleviate the possibility of the
company you are outsourcing your e-business services to from outsourcing
this vital task to another company. This happens very often in the
e-business industry by smaller companies who do not have the development
teams in house. Many times, they will outsource your project again
to another company. In this case, they are simply acting as a middle
man in the development of your e-business needs.
While this scenario isn't always bad, there are major risks on your
part to having your e-business project outsourced to an outsourcer.
The first issue lies within the fact that who do you turn to when
there is a problem with your implemented solution? Can the middle
man get answers to your questions and deal with emergencies within
a timely manner? If they outsource overseas, there is a major time
difference that must be dealt with. Are you prepared to be patient
and deal with this time difference? Probably not. When it comes to
e-business your business is operating 24/7. You may not have time
to wait until the programmers across the Atlantic Ocean get into
their offices when a problem arises.
Another drawback to working with a company to develop your e-business
solution who outsources to another company is ownership of your
e-business solution. If a company outsources a solution to another
company on a contract basis and doesn't have provisions of ownership
specifically addressed in their internal agreement, the original
developer may own your e-business solution. Imagine the nightmare
that could happen if the original contractor by whom your solution
was actually developed brings an ownership claim or demands you retain
them to maintain your Web site or online application. It could cost
you big time in legal fees or additional fees to the original developer
to settle the ownership issues.
When a company does all of its development in house by "work
for hire" employees, ownership issues do not arise as there
are no outside contractors that could make claim to the ownership
of your e-business solution. There is also better control of communication
between your company and those in house developers as they operate
within the instruction of the e-business solution provider. You won't
run into work hours problems and accountability is clear.
As part of Cenicola-Helvin Enterprises' BannerView.com e-business
solutions, all development is done in house by "work for hire" employees.
You can rest assured that when considering a BannerView.com e-business
solution, your project won't be outsourced to another company, therefore
the aforementioned issues won't arise.
